How to Sign In Using Microsoft Authenticator


✅ Before You Begin

Make sure:

  • You’ve added your SMU account to the Microsoft Authenticator app
  • Notifications are allowed for the app on your device
  • You have your phone nearby when signing in

After entering your SMU credentials, you'll be prompted to verify your identity using the Microsoft Authenticator app. There are two ways you may be asked to verify:

  • Approve a request in the app (number match)
  • Use a verification code from the app

Follow the steps below based on which option appears on your screen.


Option 1: Approve a Request in the Microsoft Authenticator App

  1. After entering your SMU email and password, select
    “Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app”

  2. A 2-digit number will appear on your computer screen

  3. You’ll receive a notification on your phone from the Microsoft Authenticator app
  4. Open the app and enter the number that matches what you see on your computer

  5. Confirm the sign-in using Face ID, Touch ID, or your phone passcode
  6. On the next screen, choose whether to stay signed in

✅ You’re now signed in to your SMU account.



Option 2: Use a Verification Code

  1. After entering your SMU email and password, select
    “Use a verification code”

  2. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
  3. Tap your SMU account to view your 6-digit code

  4. Enter that code into the sign-in prompt on your computer

  5. Click Verify, then choose whether to stay signed in

You’re now signed in using a verification code.
