Create a Passkey with Microsoft Authenticator

Overview

Passkeys with Microsoft Authenticator provide a secure and convenient way to log in to SMU services without using a password. Instead, you’ll authenticate using your mobile device’s built-in security features like Face ID, fingerprint, or a screen lock PIN.

When you sign in on your phone, Authenticator will approve your login directly. Logging in from another device (like your computer’s browser) will prompt you to use your phone to scan a QR code and verify your identity.

Set Up Passkeys in Microsoft Authenticator

Follow these steps to create and enable a passkey for your SMU account:

1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator App

Launch the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.

If you haven’t already added your SMU account:

2. Select Your SMU Account

From your list of accounts, select your Southern Methodist University account.

3. Create a Passkey

  • Tap Create a passkey.
  • You’ll be prompted to authenticate with your existing sign-in method.

If your phone isn’t using a screen lock, you’ll be prompted to enable one before proceeding. Screen lock (Face ID, fingerprint, or PIN) is required to secure your passkeys.

After enabling a screen lock, return to Authenticator and complete the passkey setup.

Once successful, you’ll see Passkey created on the screen.

4. Enable Authenticator for Passkey Use in Device Settings

To ensure that Microsoft Authenticator can manage your passkeys across your device, adjust the following settings:

For iPhone/iPad (iOS)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Passwords > Password Options (or General > Autofill & Passwords on older versions).
  3. Turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys.
  4. Select Microsoft Authenticator as the default provider.

For Android

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Passwords & Accounts (or System > Autofill service).
  3. Under Additional providers, make sure Authenticator is enabled.

Using Your Passkey

  • On Your Phone: When signing in to SMU services, approve the sign-in using the Authenticator app.
  • On Another Device (like a browser): You’ll be prompted to scan a QR code using the Authenticator app to confirm your identity and sign in.
