SMU provides secure and reliable wired and wireless network access across campus for students, faculty, staff, and guests.

Overview

The Office of Information Technology manages both wired Ethernet and wireless networks on campus. Services include secure WiFi for the SMU community, a guest network for visitors, and VPN access for secure off‑campus connections.

Wireless Networks

  • PerunaNet – Secure WiFi for students, faculty, and staff using SMU ID and password  
  • SMU_Guest – Guest network for visitors, with access up to 72 hours (longer access available by request)  
  • Device Registration – Students, faculty, and staff can register personal devices for extended access (up to one year) via the RESNET portal  

Wired Networking

  • Available in faculty and staff offices, classrooms, and residence halls  
  • Provides high‑speed connectivity with automatic IP assignment  
  • Suitable for desktops, research systems, and bandwidth‑intensive needs  

Remote Access

  • VPN (Virtual Private Network) – Secure access to campus resources from off‑site  
  • Remote Desktop – Connect to office computers and campus systems while working remotely
